Somehow, David Cronenberg returned. Along with Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, and plenty other lovable weirdos in this near-future body horror where “surgery is the new sex.” Don’t worry, we’ll get to that. After premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, critics and audiences are definitely trying to process Cronenberg’s latest sci-fi drama, and so are we. Is it this year’s Titane? Does it measure up to Possessor, the film Brandon Cronenberg (son of David Cronenberg) released two years ago? Let’s dig in. Scalpel.

Synopsis for Crimes of the Future (2022)

ENTER THE HEART OF DARKNESS. As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice, celebrity performance artist Saul Tenser publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed.
