This week on Extra Milestone, I’m joined once more by my good friend Guy Simons Jr. to dissect a pair of (relatively) recent classics that have garnered acclaim over the years, and which have almost nothing whatsoever to do with each other! First up is Pixar’s groundbreaking debut feature Toy Story, the first-ever wholly computer animated movie that has gained a reputation as an indispensable landmark in special effects and storytelling. After that, we jump ahead to M. Night Shyamalan’s unconventional superhero story Unbreakable, a grounded deconstruction of the genre that arrived before cinema as a whole had become swept up in comic book storytelling, and which has amassed a sizable (and well-earned) cult following.
NOTE: The final 5 minutes of my audio track were lost, so I had to use a backup recording that sounds slightly different.
SHOW NOTES:
- 00:05:27 – Toy Story
- 00:56:15 – Unbreakable
HOSTED BY: Sam Noland and Guy Simons Jr.
MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE: Music from Toy Story composed by Randy Newman, music from Unbreakable composed by James Newton Howard
Wow, I’m pretty surprised you didn’t have Jon on for this. He literally wrote the book on Toy Story XD
There will almost certainly be other Pixar milestones along the way. Hope it’s not too late!
Yeah, I’m kind of Toy Story-d out to be honest, so I was glad Sam got Guy on for this. You all have heard me talk about the movie before, and we want fresh perspectives for these milestones as much as possible! Thanks for listening.
I hope Jon does something for the anniversary too considering his deep knowledge of this movie and Pixar in general. You guys did a good job though.
I hope so!
I actually did something for the film’s 20th anniversary back in 2015, so thankfully Sam and Guy could handle this and provide some new takes! And yes, they did an excellent job.
No offense to Guy or anything, but he didn’t really chime in much on the Toy Story conversation. I wish you had also brought on Jon and/or Will considering they both love the film as well.
The timing was unfortunate for this one on a variety of levels. Sorry to have disappointed so many listeners!
Will and I have already gabbed quite a bit about the film since we actually first became film friends over Pixar movies! I thought Guy did a really great job and pointed out some things I’ve never really noticed before. At any rate, thank you for listening to the episode!
Don’t know how I got here, but great podcast!
Thanks for listening! We welcome strangers of all kinds 🙂
The dog freaks me out too!!!
